'Prepare to die' T-shirt creates stir on Qantas flight to New Zealand

A T-shirt that read "Prepare to die" worn by a passenger on a Qantas flight has caused a stir.

The shirt, worn by Wynand Mullins — a passenger on a flight from Australia to New Zealand — was quoting Mandy Patinkin in his role as Inigo Montoya in the 1987 film "The Princess Bride," and meant as a joke, according to the Fairfax media.

The line goes:

"Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya ... you killed my father... prepare to die."

The T-shirt, according to the Herald Sun newspaper, was created by New Zealand company Verboom.

However fellow passengers didn't see it that way and asked a flight attendant to approach Mullins on their behalf.

Mullins told Fairfax:

"The flight attendant said to me: 'Are you able to remove it because some of the passengers are quite intimidated by it'. I thought it was all a bit silly. The person next to me was laughing, because they knew the movie."

She offered to find Mullins another shirt to change into, but failed to return with it and spent the rest of the flight failing to make eye contact with him, he said.

"I wouldn't be surprised if they had someone watching me the whole time. The whole experience was a bit over the top, but also a bit comical."

The Herald Sun cited a statement released by Qantas saying that while it was not aware of the incident, it did have "dress standards for passengers... particularly for slogans which other passengers may find offensive or threatening."
