Dogs named Oscar make the news in New Zealand and South Africa (VIDEO)

It is not everyday that two dogs named Oscar simultaneously make the news in opposite parts of the world.

Starting with the sad news, Oscar the globe-trotting mutt died in California this week after being hit by a car.

Oscar became famous after his owner wrote a book about his world travels from riding camels in Pakistan to running along the banks of the Amazon, said the Daily Telegraph.

The Daily Mail reported in September about Oscar's helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon.

His story was one of survival and second chances.

His owner, Joanne Lefson, came to his rescue after the dog had been scheduled to be put down at Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

Since then the two had traveled the world together, visiting 36 countries across five continents.

They also raised awareness about stray dogs and encouraged adoption.

“Oscar was my life, my world, my purpose, my very best friend and my true companion," Lefson said, according to ioL news.

Oscar’s tragic accident has left a deep void in my heart.”

The details of how Oscar died have yet to come to light.

A memorial service for Oscar will be held in Cape Town on Jan. 25.

On a lighter note, another Oscar the dog is making the news, but this time in New Zealand.

The three-legged stray was caught on camera stealing from a convenience store — apparently not his first heist.

The dog was later picked up by animal control but he is expected to find a home pretty quickly after all the media attention.
