Queen Elizabeth II attends first UK Cabinet meeting

Queen Elizabeth II attended her first cabinet meeting during her 60 years on the throne. It is the first time a sitting monarch has done so since 1781.

The Queen sat between British Prime Minister David Cameron and Foreign Secretary William Hague, USA TODAY reported.

According to the Guardian, it was Cameron's idea and in honor of her Diamond Jubilee which marks her 60 year rule.

The Guardian reported the cabinet discussed the situation in Afghanistan and the Queen's speech next year. She was mostly silent but USA TODAY said she did mention her annual speech to Parliament "should be shorter rather than longer" and wished the group a Merry Christmas.

It was also a day of celebration. The UK Foreign Office declared a portion of British Antarctica was to be named "Queen Elizabeth Land." It previously did not have a name, according to the Guardian.
