Rupert Murdoch has taken to Twitter to pay tribute to his "193 yo" mother, the late Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, who has died at home in Australia.

Since joining Twitter in January, Murdoch — the News Corporation chairman and chief executive — has drawn attention as much for his mis-tweets and the controversial nature of several postings.

However, much of the attention overnight was on the passing of Dame Elisabeth, a major philanthropic presence in Australia who reportedly died peacefully in her home at Cruden Farm, outside Melbourne in Victoria.

Tributes flowed Thursday for the Murdoch matriarch, wife of the late media Baron Keith Murdoch, Rupert's father, is survived by three children and 77 direct descendants, the Guardian reported, adding that she would have been 104 in January.

Murdoch's Melbourne-based Herald-Sun newspaper devoted its entire front page to stories about her extensive charity work and legacy.

The Murdoch family received condolences from the Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, and several former prime ministers, as well as political leaders from across the country.

Rupert Murdoch released a statement of behalf of the family that read:

"We have lost the most wonderful mother but we are all grateful to have had her love and wisdom for so many years. Throughout her life, our mother demonstrated the very best qualities of true public service. Her energy and personal commitment made our country a more hopeful place and she will be missed by many."
