Bangladesh overpass collapse kills as many as 13

As many as 13 were killed and dozens are missing after an overpass under construction collapsed in Bangladesh's southeastern port city of Chittagong.

"So far 13 dead bodies have been recovered," sub-inspector Mohammad Alauddin told Agence France-Presse, adding that military rescue teams had been called in to help search for victims.

Police said about 20 people remained trapped after three concrete beams of the overpass, each 42 meters long, collapsed in Bangladesh's second-largest city, according to CNN.

Earlier, UPI put the number of those still trapped at between 60 and 70.

Outrage over the collapse spread quickly, with hundreds of protesters taking to the streets, CNN also reported. Some protesters set fire to vehicles and a police outpost, while others attacked a fire engine, alleging that fire units came late. Protesters also torched a makeshift office of the construction firm and its equipment. Police followed up by firing several rounds of tear gas at the crowd.

At least a dozen others were injured when a nearby mosque wall collapsed after hundreds climbed on top of it, according to UPI.
