Small college basketball player smashes NCAA point record

Grinnell College point guard Jack Taylor was on fire during Tuesday night's game against Faith Baptist Bible in Grinnell, Iowa.

The 5' 10" sophomore guard scored 138 points by himself, beating the NCAA record by 25 points. 

“I felt pretty confident tonight,” Taylor told ESPN after the Division III game.

“Most of my shots were off the dribble in isolation from the perimeter and that’s kind of my game, working off the dribble. I felt pretty confident when I got the ball tonight. That’s for sure.”

Reuters reports that Taylor is only the third college player to score more than 100 points in an NCAA game.

The previous record was set back in 1954 by Rio Grande's Rio Grande's Bevo Francis who scored 113 points. Francis also scored 116 against Ashland Junior College in 1954. 

In 36 minutes during Tuesdays game, Taylor made 27 of 71 3-point attempts, was 52 of 108 overall from the field and added seven free throws on 10 attempts.

Grinnell beat  Faith Baptist Bible 179-104. 

"There was a point during the second half where I hit a number of threes in a row — maybe seven or eight — I felt like anything I threw up was going in," said Taylor, who transferred to Grinnell from Wisconsin-Lacrosse last year. "I've been in the zone before but I've never taken so many shots."

Even Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant was impressed by Taylor's performance. 

"That's crazy, man. I don't care what level you're at. Scoring 138 points is pretty insane," Bryant told Sports Illustrated after the Lakers' victory over the Nets.
