Development in Syria of a Political Opposition

The Takeaway

A meeting in Doha, Qatar united the Syrian opposition into a political body that would be recognized by the international community. The United States has declared its support for the Syrian opposition, which now has representatives from almost every revolutionary group on the ground in Syria.
Mona Jundy is attorney in Flint, Michigan and part of the Syrian National Council. She is just back from the meeting in Qatar, and says the meeting was a success. “Cautious success, but success nonetheless,” she says.
“One of the problems throughout this revolution is that there hasn’t really been a political body recognized by the international community that’s been able to sort of wheel and deal on behalf of the revolution,” Jundy says. “And we have hopes that this new body will be able to get that legitimacy.”
