Haiti: Flooding claims at least 10 lives

Haiti continues to be at the mercy of hurricane season, as a night of heavy rainfall caused flooding that took at least 10 lives. 

Most of the deaths occurred in the in the port city of Cap-Haitien, where floodwaters caused houses to be swept away or collapse, Jean Henry Petit of Haiti's Civil Protection Office said Friday, the Associated Press reported.

Agence France Presse was reporting the death toll at 16 as of Friday afternoon. 

"The city has been struck by disaster. There are many dead and major damage. All the populous areas are flooded," Cap Haitien Mayor Wilborde Beon told AFP by telephone."The entrance to the city is completely flooded, all the rivers and ravines are swollen." 

The country is still recovering from Hurricane Sandy, which claimed 54 lives and destroyed most of the crops on the southern part of the island, AP reported.

"We ask the private sector to help us because it continues to rain," said Beon. "All other sectors of the state have been mobilized."

The flooding comes as World Bank head Jim Yong Kim completed a two-day whirlwind tour of Haiti to figure out how the organization can help in the wake of Sandy. 

"Despite the earthquake, despite the hurricanes, despite the enormous obstacles that Haiti always seems to face, I think there's more hope today than I have seen in a very long time," Kim told The Associated Press.
