Former Penn State President Graham Spanier charged in Sandusky case (VIDEO)

Ex-Penn State President Graham Spanier was charged Thursday with perjury and obstruction of justice over his handling of the Jerry Sandusky case.

The charges, filed in state court, also included endangering the welfare of children, USA Today reported.

Spanier, 64, told the Patriot-News on Thursday afternoon that he's not guilty of the accusations against him, claiming the Pennsylvania governor is trying to settle a personal score.

Penn State fired Spanier in November after he served 16 years as the university's president.

He was let go shortly after the arrest of Sandusky, a 68-year-old former Penn State assistant football coach.

Sandusky was convicted this summer of 45 criminal counts of sexual abuse of 10 boys and is now serving 30 to 60 years in prison, although he's maintained his innocence and is pursuing appeals.

According to The Associated Press, Spanier has said he doesn't remember emails from a mother in 1998 who claimed Sandusky showered with her son.

His recollections about a 2001 complaint by a team assistant who claimed he saw Sandusky sexually abusing a boy in a shower are hazy at best.

NBC News reported new charges are also pending against ex-athletic director Tim Curley and ex-vice president Gary Schultz.

Both have already been indicted in the case.
