VIDEO: US Rep says evolution, big bang theory are lies

US Rep. Paul Broun told a crowd of supporters that evolution, embryology and the Big Bang theory are "lies straight from the pit of hell" meant to convince people that they don't need religion. 

"God's word is true," Broun said in the video. "I've come to understand that."

"All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and Big Bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of hell.

And it's lies to try to keep me and all the folks who are taught that from understanding that they need a savior."

The Republican Congressman made the statements at a church-sponsored banquet in Georgia in late September but the video is just now being circulated by progressive watchdog group, the Bridge Project, reports NBC News. 

Broun, a medical doctor, told the crowd that he was a scientist and he has seen "a lot of scientific data" that the earth is not 9,000 years old, reports the Athens Banner-Herald.

"I believe it was made in six days as we know them," he said. That’s what the Bible tells us.”

Those beliefs are commonly held by fundamentalist Christians who believe the Bible to be literally true.

Meredith Griffanti, the Washington, D.C., spokeswoman for Broun, gave a brief statement about the video to the Athens Banner-Herald..

“Dr. Broun was speaking off the record to a large church group about his personal beliefs regarding religious issues,” she wrote.

According to AP, Broun is running unopposed for reelection in November.
