Mexico: 6.2 magnitude earthquake hits Baja California

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – A powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Mexico’s Baja California peninsula this afternoon, CNN reported.

The US Geological Survey said the center of the quake was located 46 miles north of the city of La Paz, the Associated Press reported.

Reuters said a 6.0-magnitude earthquake is capable of causing severe damage, but so far there were no reports of damage or injuries.

"We are calling on the public to remain calm in case there are aftershocks," state civil defense director Carlos Rincon was quoted by the AP as saying.

According to the USGS, Mexico sits on top of three of the large tectonic plates and is one of the “most seismologically active regions” in the world.
