“General Hospital” star John Ingle died on Sunday from cancer, E! Online reported today. He was 84.

Ingle played the cunning patriarch Edward Quartermaine on the daytime soap opera for two decades, Reuters reported.

He filmed his last episode on August 24.

Television network ABC released a statement saying Ingle passed away “surrounded by his family in California... after a courageous battle with cancer," USA Today reported.

The former drama teacher began his acting career in 1985, earning television credits on “Cheers,” “The Drew Carey Show,” “Beverly Hills 90210,” “Dallas,” and, of course, “General Hospital,” Reuters reported.

CBS News said Ingle was married to Grace-Lynne Martin for 57 years. She died in February from natural causes. They had five daughters.
