Russian killer demands Pussy Riot freed
Pussy Riot’s supporters say their performance has helped expose the authorities’ nature.
On Thursday Russian officials found the bodies of two murdered women beneath a scrawled message demanding that the jailed members of Pussy Riot be freed.
Although the substance has not been confirmed, officials say they believe the words "Free Pussy Riot" were written in blood. Investigators said the two victims were a 76-year-old and a 38-year-old woman.
An investigator told the Associated Press that the killer may be trying to mislead police by drawing attention to Pussy Riot supporters.
According to the Press Association, Pussy Riot's attorney, Nikolai Polozov, took to Twitter to express the band's sadness saying, "what happened in Kazan is horrible. Polozov additionally told Interfax, "I am sorry that some freaks are using Pussy Riot's band name."
Earlier this month the punk rock group found infamy after being convicted of hooliganism following the publication of a YouTube video of them performing in a Russian Orthodox cathedral dressed in brightly colored dresses and balaclavas while chanting for the Virgin Mary to “rid Russia of Vladimir Putin." Three of the group's members were sentenced to two years in prison.
The Press Association noted that the Kremlin-friendly television networks in Russia covered the Pussy Riot cathedral incident in mostly negative terms and used the Kazan murder to further vilify the women, Some print publications even used headlines suggesting that the members of Pussy Riot inspired the double homicide.
