USA men beat Spain in Basketball to take the gold medal

Americans are still the world's reigning basketball champs, though just barely. 

The USA beat Spain 107-100 in a close match, grabbing their second straight gold medal in Basketball on Sunday during one of the Games' final events, the Associated Press reported. 

The men followed suit of the USA women's team, who also won gold. 

The game was, like in 2008, a tough win for the United States, "defined by foul after foul and grinding stop-and-go tempo," according to the Bleacher Report. 

Kevin Durant scored 30 points for the US, while LeBron James added 19 points and Kobe Bryant got 17 for the Americans, who had a slim one-point lead going into the fourth quarter, according to the Los Angeles Times. 

The team celebrated their win to "Born in the USA" while waving American flags grabbed from the audience over their heads, the Times reported.

Spain's players Juan Carlos Navarro and Rudy Fernandez were out in full force during the first half of the game, scoring 19 points and 12 points respectively.

Marc Gasol, Pau Gasol's brother who was playing for Spain, had to sit out of the game with four fouls early on, according to the Bleacher Report. 

Part of the success and increased quality of basketball players worldwide is credited to America's successes at past Olympics, especially the 1992 Dream Team, the first to feature active NBA players including Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan, the Guardian pointed out. 

"Of course, the 2012 version of the Dream Team, for my money the second best group of basketball players ever assembled, had to fight harder," wrote the Guardian's sports blogger Hunter Felt. "The other countries are catching up, and this is an awesome thing. I cannot wait for 2016."
