Cyprus, Grenada win their first medals; Chile’s Tomás González country’s first Olympic gymnast

London's Summer Games saw three nations making Olympic history today, with Cyprus and Grenada claiming their first medals and Tomás González the first Chilean to qualify for gymnastics events.

Grenada's 19-year-old sprinter Kirani James was awarded the gold medal win for his 43.94-second performance at the men's 400 meter race today, according to Agence-France Press.

It was also Cyprus' day to shine, with Pavlos Kontides taking silver in sailing's Laser class today, reported the Associated Press. The win is Cyprus' first medal since joining the Olympic competition in 1980. Kontides told AP: "I guess I wrote my name in Cyprus sport in golden letters."

And then there's Chilean gymnast Tomás González, whom everyone seems to think it just awesome — or so the popularity of this adoring Buzzfeed article suggests. 

González made history by being the first Chilean to qualify for both the men’s floor exercise and vault finals in the games, events that took place Sunday and today. He was also one of Chile's top hopes for a medal, but alas, "Chile’s González agonizingly misses out on Olympic medal," the Santiago Times headlined González's Sunday performance. 

But there's still plenty to like about Chile's first gymnast to qualify for the summer games, according to Buzzfeed — the fact that he qualified being number one.

Number two on their list is the gymnast's close shave with a bronze medal today, having placed fourth.

Number three is his mustache: yes, his mustache.

Number four is, again, his mustache…turns out it's a crazy-distracting little number.
