Serena Williams wins women's gold for singles tennis at Olympics

Serena Williams won her first singles gold medal, beating Maria Sharapova 6-0, 6-1 on the tennis court at the London Olympics.

CBS News reported the victory makes her the second woman ever to complete a career Golden Slam. 

The No. 4-seeded Williams lost only 17 games in her six matches, the Associated Press wrote.

Just last month, Williams won her fifth Wimbledon title.

According to the AP, the Golden Slam was first achieved by Steffi Graf at the 1988 Olympics after winning all four major titles.

Next up for Williams: Serena and her sister Venus compete for their third gold in doubles tennis later on Saturday.

USA TODAY reported the sisters previously took the Olympic doubles gold in 2000 and 2008.
