Ghana's President John Atta Mills has died, according to a statement from the president's office.

"It is with a heavy heart…that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the president of the Republic of Ghana," Reuters reported the statement as saying.

According to Agence France-Presse, the details of Mills' death are unclear, but the 68-year-old leader of the West African nation is said to have died a few hours after becoming ill.

BBC News tweeted that Mills died at a hospital in Accra.

Sahara Reporters noted that Mills' health has been the subject of concern for almost a year, as he made frequent visits to US hospitals, taking three trips this year alone.

"I am going for a medical checkup. I go there to ensure everything is okay. I am going to see my doctors for some examination then I will come back and continue my work of building a better Ghana," Mills had said regarding his trips to the US, according to Sahara Reporters.

Reports say that no other details have been made available regarding Mills' death.
