American Apparel says it could have new US uniforms in London in 7 days

American Apparel is in talks with Russia to design its Olympics uniforms for 2014. A representative of the company said, "American Apparel could start working on uniforms today and have them in London within 7 days."

The Ralph Lauren-designed uniforms that America's athletes will be wearing in London this summer caused huge amounts of controversy because they were made, ironically, in China.

Last week, everyone from bloggers and designers to politicians weighed in, with US lawmakers especially expressing outrage at the origin of the clothes. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said last Thursday, "I am so upset. I think the Olympic committee should be ashamed of themselves. I think they should be embarrassed. I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again," according to The Washington Post.

That could be a possibility, if someone takes up American Apparel on their casual offer today.

The New York Post reported that American Apparel, the Made-in-the-USA clothing manufacturer, has been in talks with the Russian Olympic team to design their 2014 uniforms since 2011.

"[Russian Olympic team representatives] said they didn’t want anything that was made in China," the company's CEO Dov Charney told The New York Post.

When the blog Fashionista followed up with American Apparel, their representative made sure to tell the blog, "American Apparel could start working on uniforms today and have them in London within 7 days. That’s what vertical integration is about."

It's pretty much impossible to change the London uniforms, but the US Olympic Committee said on Friday that the uniforms for the opening and closing ceremonies in 2014 would be made in the United States, according to CNN.

Meanwhile, The Huffington Post wondered if maybe American Apparel would have a shot at designing the uniforms once Ralph Lauren's contract with the US Olympics expires in 2020.
