“Seven Habits” author Stephen Covey dead at 79

Stephen Covey, author of the 1989 blockbuster "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People," died early Monday at an Idaho hospital of complications from a bicycle accident in April.

In a statement to employees of a Utah consulting firm Covey co-founded, his family said the 79-year-old writer and motivational speaker was pronounced dead at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, The Associated Press reported.

"In his final hours, he was surrounded by his loving wife and each one of his children and their spouses, just as he always wanted," his family said.

Covey was hospitalized after being knocked unconscious in the bicycle accident in the foothills of Provo, Utah, in April, according to the AP.

Born in Salt Lake City in 1932, he was named to Time magazine’s top 25 most influential Americans of 1996 and his "Seven Habits" book made several lists as one of the most influential business books ever, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

The book and subsequent spinoffs sold more than 20 million copies in 38 languages, according to the Tribune.

Covey was also co-founder of Utah-based professional services company FranklinCovey.
