Vice President Joe Biden spoke at the NAACP on Thursday, rallying support for President Barack Obama and telling the civil rights organization that Obama had the "character of his convictions," according to the Associated Press.

Biden said, "He has put country first," and drew cheers when he credited Obama for leadership on the landmark Affordable Care Act, the mission to kill Osama bin Laden and the automaker bailout of General Motors and Chrysler.

Speaking just a day after Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was booed at the NAACP for saying that he would repeal Obama's health care law, Biden said the Republicans' plan was "not to get us out of this recession, not to promote jobs, not to do the things that needed to be done, but to make Barack Obama a one–term president," according to Politico.

Biden touted the Obama administration's record on African-Americans, saying, "Remember what this at its core was all about, why this organization at its core was all about." He continued, "It was about the franchise. It was about the right to vote. Because when you have the right to vote, you have the right to change things."

He went on to say that the embattled Attorney General Eric Holder was fighting to protect voting rights as the Republicans threw in obstacles, according to Politico.

He said, "And we, the president and I and Eric and all of us, we see a future where those rights are expanded, not diminished."

Obama spokes to the NAACP via a taped video message on Thursday, telling them that he stood "on your shoulders." Obama's campaign cited "scheduling conflicts" when asked why the president was skipping the NAACP convention, according to CNN.

Meanwhile, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) played down the boos that Romney received the day before, saying, "There was that one moment, but if you look at the broader speech there were a number of times when he got a very resounding applause," according to Politico.

As The Washington Post noted, Biden got booed for another reason: He wanted to wrap up his remarks, and the crowd wanted more.
