Scientologists are a “creepy,” “very weird cult,” says Rupert Murdoch on Tom Cruise

The media mogul Rupert Murdoch has targeted Tom Cruise in a series of tweets that described the Church of Scientology as "a very weird cult."

"Scientology back in news. Very weird cult, but big, big money involved with Tom Cruise either number two or three in hiearchy (sic)," Murdoch posted on his official Twitter feed, Reuters reports.

The News Corp chairman and chief executive posted the comment on Sunday, after news of Cruise's split with Katie Holmes broke on Friday.  Holmes has reportedly cited Cruise's ties to Scientology as a reason for their separation.

The Guardian says Murdoch "appeared in combative mood," with other tweets dismissing the New York Times as "boring", Scientology as "evil" and the British government as "weak".

However, it was Cruise and the Church of Scientology that were at the center of his online musings, Hollywood Reporter confirms.  He later tweeted: "Watch Katie Holmes and Scientology story develop. Something creepy, maybe even evil, about these people."  And then when the backlash began: "Since Scientology tweet hundreds of attacks. Expect they will increase and get worse and maybe threatening. Still stick to my story."

There has been no immediate response to requests for comment from the Church of Scientology, or from publicists for Cruise or Holmes.
