India suicide is the second worst killer, says a new study

Suicide more prevalent in India than once believed, says new research.

The study in the British medical journal, the Lancet, found that suicide is the second most common cause of death among the young, especially educated young people, in India.

The Times of India reported that just under 60 percent of female suicides are between the ages of 15 and 29, while men of that age make up around 40 percent of total suicides in that gender group.

The study also found that an alarming percentage of educated people are taking their own lives.

Men who finished secondary school or higher educated had a 43 percent higher risk of suicide than those without.

The risk increased an enormous 90 percent in women.

The Pioneer speculates that one reason might be the immense migration taking place from village to city for economic opportunity in which migrants become isolated from family and friends.

This possibility correlates with the fact that suicide rates are 10 times higher in the developed cities of southern India where educated people seek employment than less developed places in the north.

Businessweek said that the World Health Organization has estimated that there are about 900,000 suicides worldwide every year and India and China account for about half of them.
