The victim of a gruesome murder whose body parts were posted to Canada's top political parties has been identified as gay Chinese engineering student Jun Lin, 33.

According to various international news reports, police are continuing the search for suspect Luka Rocco Magnotta, a Canadian porn actor.

Magnotta, who is known by many names — including "kitten vacuumer" — and is also suspected of cannibalism, is now on Interpol's equivalent of its most-wanted list.

The film is purported to show him killing Jun with an ice pick, cutting him up, sexually abusing him and then eating him with a knife and fork.

A French detective told the Daily Mail newspaper that police believed he had flown to France on May 26, after murdering Lin overnight on May 24.

"He’s obsessed with the Eiffel Tower and the Moulin Rouge and is confident that he can lie low in a country he loves. All efforts are being made to arrest him," the detective was quoted as saying.

Montreal police commander Ian Lafreniere reportedly said Magnotta could "disguise himself; he can change into a woman, wear a wig."

Magnotta may also have crossed over into London and had lived six months ago in Wembley, in the city's north, the Mail reported.

While in the UK, he posted internet film showing a live kitten being fed to a snake. After journalists confronted him, he reportedly emailed The Sun newspaper saying: "You will be hearing from me again. This time, however, the victims won’t be small animals.' He sent a similar warning to the BBC, the Mail reported.

News.com.au also cited a French police official as saying that Magnotta had flown to Paris from Montreal last weekend, before the case emerged.

Meanwhile, the owner of a Montreal convenience store where Lin worked reportedly described him to the Canadian Press as a responsible, polite cashier who was friendly with customers.

“I’m just shocked and I don’t know if it is true, but I hope it’s not,” Kankan Huang reportedly said.

“I don’t want to believe this, but sometimes you have to accept the truth… we have to accept it, we’ve got no choice. What can we do?”

A Montreal police commander was quoted as saying Lin — an undergraduate in engineering and computer science at Concordia University — didn't have family in the French-Canadian city but a family member had reported him missing on Tuesday.

A missing person's notice on the website of the Chinese consulate in Montreal identified the victim as being from the city of Wuhan and having arrived in Montreal in July 2011.
