Spanish doctor must pay child support after failed abortion

A Spanish doctor has been ordered to pay for the upkeep of a child after a failed abortion operation led to the birth of a child.

A court in Palma de Mallorca ordered the doctor to pay almost 1,000 euros ($1,200) a month in maintenance for the child until he reaches his 25th birthday, along with $188,000 in emotional damages, according to MSN.

"There has never been a case like this before in Spain. We don't know if it has ever happened anywhere else in the world," Eva Munar, lawyer for the 24-year-old mother, told the Guardian.

The attempted abortion had been performed when the mother was almost seven weeks pregnant. At an appointment two weeks later, the doctor took a scan and told the woman she was no longer pregnant. 

"The scan lasted three minutes and I was out again. It was: 'You are fine, off you go and carry on with your life as normal,'" the mother told journalists.

According to the Guardian, the mother returned three months later and received another scan that revealed she was still pregnant.

The clinic refused to give her an abortion at that time as the woman was 22 weeks pregnant. Abortions are illegal in Spain after 14 weeks, according to Yahoo News.

According to Yahoo, the mother is still happy to have her baby despite the circumstances.

"When I have to explain all this to him, I'll try to make sure that he feels okay about it. It was back then that he was not wanted, not now," she said.
