Obama’s ‘Life of Julia’ campaign tool drawing criticism

President Obama's 'The Life of Julia' web application highlights how the war on women will be a central issue in the November election.

The Life of Julia follows an average American woman throughout her life. It highlights the ways Obama helps women, while also highlighting the ways Mitt Romney may hurt them. 

The application starts off with a young Julia, at 3-years-old. Here, the page notes, "Under President Obama: Julia is enrolled in a Head Start program to help get her ready for school. Because of steps President Obama has taken to improve programs like this one, Julia joins thousands of students across the country who will start kindergarten ready to learn and succeed."

Mitt Romney doesn't fair so well. In the same 3-year-old scenario, the page notes, "Under Mitt Romney: The Romney/Ryan budget could cut programs like Head Start by 20%, meaning the program would offer 200,000 fewer slots per year."

Throughout the fictitious life of Julia, Obama is there for her, providing insurance at age 22, while Mitt Romney would "kill it dead", it being Obama Care allowing people to remain on their parent's insurance until the age of 26.

At age 67, Julia retires. With Obama, she is provided for with social security. With Romney, her benefits are cut by up to 40 percent. 

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt told ABC News, “It’s just a representation of a typical middle-class woman throughout the different phases of her life, as the site states."

LaBolt goes on to say, "The tool – pushed out through social media networks and on the campaign’s website – is significant as part of a concerted effort by Team Obama to keep alive the theme of a 'Republican war on women.'"

The idea of a war on women, and the Julia application, have not been received well by Republicans. 

Romney spokeswoman, Amanda Henneberg, told the Huffington Post, “Each night, too many women go to sleep wondering if they can pay the mortgage, if they can afford to put food on the table, and if their children will have a job after graduating from college. Nearly a million more women are out of work under President Obama while female poverty is at its highest level in nearly two decades. By all accounts, President Obama’s policies have failed women, like all Americans, and they deserve a president who will focus on getting America back on track.”

Those on Twitter didn't miss a beat, mostly commenting with a sharp tongue against Julia, and her dependence on government.
