Diplomatic Dialogue In the Wake of Chen Guangcheng’s Release

China was host to the one-day Strategic and Economic Dialogue yesterday, in which Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner met with their Chinese counterparts to discuss foreign trade, cyber warfare and maritime security.
But the meetings were largely overshadowed by the release of Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng from the American embassy, and the uncertainty around the conditions of his release. Christopher Johnson, the freeman Chair in China Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and a former senior China analyst at the CIA, explains the latest in both events.
