Video: teen in China swallowed up by sidewalk sinkhole as she talks on her phone

Surveillance camera video posted to YouTube shows a teenage Chinese girl as she is swallowed up by a sidewawlk sinkhole in the city of Xi’an in central Shaanxi province, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The event happened March 25 but the video is just now getting the world’s attention on the Internet, according to the Canadian news agency QMI.

A dramatic rescue ensued. The Telegraph republished this YouTube video which contains video from Reuters:


In the video the unnamed girl can be seen to walk past safety cones placed around the danger area.

A passing taxi driver came to her aid by climbing down into the 20-foot deep cavity, according to The Telegraph.

"I called out to her but she didn't respond. After I shook her a little, she came to," Wang Wei is quoted as saying. "The dirt kept showering down on us and the kid couldn't stop crying."

According to CNN and KVUE, a Texas broadcaster, the girl’s family used the video to find Wang Wei and thank him.

According to QMI, different video that recently surfaced showed a fatal April 1 accident in Beijing in which in a 27-year-old woman fell through a sidewalk into scalding water. Yang Erjing, 27, suffered burns over 99 percent of her body and died eight days later.
