US Soccer: Men’s team eliminated from Olympics

The US men's Olympic soccer team has been eliminated from the London Olympics after a late goal by El Salvador tied up the game 3-3

With only a handful of seconds left to run the clock, substitute goalie Sean Johnson couldn't handle a shot taken 25 yards out by Jaime Alas of El Salvador in stoppage time.

The ball bounced off his hands, up over him, and into the net, and El Salvador ended the United States' dream of going to the Olympics.  This is the second time that the US has missed the Olympics since 1976, CNN reported

"This is probably the worst feeling I've ever felt in my life so far as a pro athlete," said Freddy Adu, the US team captain, CNN reported. "This is going to be hard to get over. But at the end of the day things like this happen. For me, I never want to feel this way again, and I'm going to do whatever it takes to never feel this way again."

Several Americans dropped to the field in disbelief after Alas's goal.  Coach Caleb Porter said that he had to rally them back to their feet for one last chance that never materialized.

Porter hugged Johnson after the game.

"He feels like he's let everybody down, let his teammates down, and I told him he didn't," Porter said.

The two nations that reach Monday's final will both go to London 2012, Fox Sports reported
