Sugar the cat survives 19-story fall from Boston high-rise

Sugar the cat may have used up eight of her nine lives after surviving a 19-floor plunge from a high-rise apartment building in Boston.

If cats really do have nine lives, Sugar may have used up eight of hers when she survived a 19-story fall from a high-rise apartment in Boston.

The white feline had no broken bones or cuts, just some bruising on her lungs after the fall from a window owner Brittany Kirk had opened to enjoy the recent unseasonably warm weather, The Associated Press reported.

The Animal Rescue League estimates Sugar fell between 150 and 200 feet, according to the AP.

“You could see the impact crater where she actually did hit the ground and she actually lost some fur in the hole, too," Mike Brammer, the rescue's assistant manager of animal rescue services, told MSNBC.

Surprisingly, rescuers say studies show cats have a better chance of surviving falls when they're from higher than nine stories, CBS News reported.

"The cats were able to relax, orient themselves in a flying squirrel position with the legs spread out. It slowed their descent down," rescue manager Brian O'Connor told CBS.

Kirk called Sugar's survival a "miracle" and says building management has since installed a screen in her window, the AP reported.
