Ethiopia launches attack on rival Eritrea

Ethiopia's government spokesperson said on Thursday that the country sent troops into neighboring Eritrea to take out "subversive groups," the Associated Press reported. He described the attack as "successful."

The two neighboring rivals fought a war from 1998 to 2000 over a border dispute. An international commission later determined that Eritrea broke international law by invading Ethiopia. which led to the war, the BBC reported.

The “Eritrea government has continued launching attacks at Ethiopia through its proxy groups. The attacks had continued. And the recent attacks against European tourists is one of the reasons for the retaliation,” Shimeles Kemal, a government spokesperson, said. Five foreign tourists were killed and two were kidnapped in January; Ethiopia blamed Eritreans for the attack.
