World Cup 2022: Qatar considers not serving alcohol

GlobalPost

Qatar is debating whether or not it will serve alcohol at the 2022 World Cup, said a senior official in charge of the football championship on Wednesday.

"Alcohol will be allowed in Qatar. We're discussing with FIFA the extent of it and where exactly. You've got different perspectives coming out of Brazil, England and Russia. There's obviously a serious issue, and it's something we're looking into," 2022 Supreme Committee Secretary General Hassan Al Thawadi told reporters, according to Reuters.

He went on to say, "For me personally, I don't see the reason for it being in the stadiums, but it's something we're discussing with FIFA."

The sale of alcohol in the tiny Gulf nation is presently limited to five star hotels.

It also does not sell alcohol currently at football games.

Premier League chairman Sir Dave Richards, said that Qatari officials had their "heads in the sand," if they refused to allow alcohol to be served, according to World Football Insider.

According to the Associated Press, FIFA and Brazil argued over sales during the 2014 World Cup as the South American nation currently forbids the sale of alcohol in stadiums due to fan violence.

FIFA argued that a ban on alcohol would hurt sponsors of the event, which include a number of beer and liquor producers.

During a press conference Thawadi said, "It's important for us to ensure that everyone who comes has a great time and enjoys themselves, while at the same time showcasing the culture of the Arab world."

Qatar was a surprise victor in a competition for hosting rights of the 2022 World Cup, beating Japan, South Korea, the United States and Australia.
