Indonesia, where Blackberry sex clips equal “low-budget porn”

To qualify as a "low-budget" pornographer in Indonesia, it seems that all you need is a BlackBerry.

According to the Jakarta Globe, three men and one woman were arrested at a "porn video shoot" in an Indonesian hotel. Their rig amounted to a single Blackberry camera and the group insisted their clips were intended for "private use."

But in Indonesia, where cops and lawmakers remain fixated on their anti-porn crusade, screwing around in a hotel room can become a full-on pornography operation once someone whips out a smart phone.

The legal distinction is important: distributing videos deemed "pornography" can bring on long prison terms, such as the 3.5-year sentence handed down to Indonesian pop star Ariel after his sex clips with his celebrity girlfriend circulated around the country.

But anyone who can prove sex clips are private — as Ariel attempted to do — is within the law. His case was weakened, in part, because his videos were saved in easily shared video files on his computer. (The pop star denies distributing them himself.)

The takeway lesson? In Indonesia, if you want to record sex, stay home, lock the doors and consider investing in a vintage reel-to-reel camera.
