Happy Anniversary, Your Majesty!

On this day, 60 years ago, King George the Sixth's valet walked into his room at Sandringham Estate to wake him and found him dead.

The heir to the throne, Princess Elizabeth was on an official trip in Africa when the news reached her that she was now Queen Elizabeth.

Today marks the official start of anniversary celebrations of this Diamond Jubilee. Believe me it isn't just a day-long event. The Royal Family doesn't do small, nor does Britain when it comes to major royal occasions. There will be months of events culminating in a four-day holiday in June.

Today the Queen sent a message to her loyal subjects saying she looks to the future with a “clear head and warm heart.”

The Daily Telegraph does royal stuff with the right embellishments and this article gives a flavor of what you can expect for the next few months.

One interesting point in today's coverage is made by former Prime Minister John Major who told the BBC, "Most of the present cabinet weren't born when the Queen became monarch. So there's very little she hasn't seen, very little she doesn't understand. And anyone who doesn't listen to her views and consult her when necessary is missing a huge opportunity."
