Birmingham news: Severe weather hits the area, leaves two dead (VIDEO)

Severe weather ripped across the South on Monday, killing at least two people in Alabama and leaving over 100 injured, the Associated Press reported.

Storms and possible tornadoes have left homes flattened, windows blown out of cars and roofs peeled back in the town Oak Grove, near Birmingham, over night, the AP reported. Oak Grove was previously hit hard in April when tornadoes struck the area and killed about 240 people.

"Some roads are impassable, there are a number of county roads where you have either debris down, trees down, damage from homes," said Yasamie Richardson, a spokeswoman for the Alabama Emergency Management Agency, the AP reported.

The two fatalities reported near Birmingham, were a 16-year-old girl from the city of Clay and an 82-year-old man from Oak Grove, Jefferson County sheriff’s Sgt. Jack Self said, CNN reported. Injuries reported ranged from cuts and bruises to broken bones.

On Monday morning fire crews were spread out across Alabama, searching homes to rescue people trapped inside, especially near Center Point, north of Birmingham, USA Today reported.

The storms that wrecked havoc over Alabama also brought hail and strong winds to Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois and Mississippi, USA Today reported. Tornado warnings were also issued for parts of Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama.

"You could feel the walls shaking and you could hear a loud crash. After that it got quiet, and the tree had fallen through my sister's roof," said Stevie Sanders, who hid in the laundry room with her parents and sister in the middle of the night, the AP reported. The Sanders family was unharmed.
