VIDEO: At Golden Globes, The Artist, Homeland are top winners

The Takeaway

The Artist and The Descendants were the big winners as far as movies at Sunday night’s Golden Globe awards, but nine other films received an award in at least one category.

On the television front, Homeland, a new hit series from Showtime took top honors, winning both best drama and best actress. No other TV program earned more than one award, though the network Showtime’s productions won several awards as well.

“That show did pretty well,” said Rafer Guzman, Newsday movie critic.

Claire Danes, who won the best actress award for Homeland, was lauded for her acceptance speech. It was her second victory, though her first came when she was just 15 and appeared in My So Called Life. The first time around, she forgot to thank her mother — this time she made sure that Mom wasn’t forgotten.

“It was a very nice speech she did,” Guzman said.

Ricky Gervais hosted this year’s event, which seemed to leave the audience less than enthused. According to the Times, the audience perked up noticeably when Octavia Spencer won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for her role in The Help — the popular movie about life in the segregated South.

Guzman said if there’s a theme out of this year’s Golden Globes, it’s that there’s no clear favorite to win a majority of the Oscar awards — set to be presented Feb. 26.

“There really are no clear front-runners,” Guzman said. “We’re talking about movies that got two awards and three awards.”

The Artist won three awards and The Descendants won two.
