Peruvians protest gold mine
Protests are growing against a proposed gold mine in northern Peru.
An estimated 10,000 people marched to protest the mine on Thursday, reports the Los Angeles Times.
Locals believe the proposed mine threatens their water supply and that it could destroy their ecosystem.
The Conga mine would be operated by Newmont Mining, which wants to invest $4 billion in the project. The government could earn $800 million per year in taxes and royalties.
The mine is expected to yield between 580,000 and 680,000 ounces of gold per year and between 155 million and 235 million pounds of copper.
Roads have been blockaded and some schools and businesses closed.
