At least seven people were killed, including children, when a train collided with a bus carrying schoolchildren in central Argentina today.

On board the bus were 42 schoolgirls, six female adults and the driver, said police spokesman Carlos Pereyra, reports La Nacion. The crash occurred in the town of Zanjitas, in San Luis Province.

Two girls are in serious condition, and there were numerous injuries.

Pereyra said there wasn't a barrier at the crossing, but that there was good signage.

The children, who attend Santa María de San Luis school, were on their way to a spiritual retreat.

The youngest girls on the bus were between 10 and 12 years old, reports La Nacion.

The train was carrying coal from Retiro to Mendoza.
