Facebook introduces Timeline

Facebook kicked off its annual f8 conference Thursday and introduced a new feature called Timeline that the social networking site hopes will show "the evolution of your profile."

In a blog announcing the new feature, Facebook says Timeline will enable users to highlight their favorite past events, photographs or updates so they do not quickly get lost and replaced by the most recent updates.

"Imagine if there was an easy way to rediscover the things you shared, and collect all your best moments in a single place," Sam Lessin, a product manager at Facebook, wrote. "With timeline, now you have a home for all the great stories you've already shared. They don't just vanish as you add new stuff."

Mark Zuckerberg said at the conference: "We want to design a place that feels like your home. Where you tell story online is very personal. You spend a lot of time curating it. We want to make Timeline a place you're proud to call your home. It's a completely new aesthetic for Facebook. It gives you the ability to curate all your stories so you can express who you really are," as reported on Huffington Post's live blog.

Zuckerberg also used Facebook's f8 conference, being held in San Francisco, to unveil an update to Open Graph that will introduce a "completely new class of social apps that weren't possible before," according to the live blog. Users will be able to show more types of activity than before.
