President Obama will meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to encourage both parties to resume face-to-face peace talks. U.S. officials concede there is little they can do to stop Abbas from making a formal request for Palestinian statehood before the United Nations Security Council. The U.S. has promised to veto the request.
