All week long, in honor of the tenth anniversary of 9/11, we’re talking with and about young people who were coming of age at the time of the September 11 attacks. We’re calling the series “Generation 9/11.”
Today, we’re looking at how geography and religion led two young men to two unique 9/11 experiences. Haris Durrani is a college student and award-winning writer who grew up Muslim in Connecticut. At the time of the 9/11 attacks, he was in fourth grade and his dad worked in New York City.
George Slotin is college student and opera singer who grew up Jewish in South Carolina. When 9/11 happened, his fourth grade teacher had the students paint a mural to express their feelings. That mural is now in a book called “Art for Heart: Remembering 9/11.”
