Senior Al-Qaida Leader in Yemen Killed; Security Clamps Down on Protests

The Takeaway

In Yemen yesterday, a senior leader of the country’s al-Qaida branch, Ayed al-Shabwani, was reportedly killed in fighting in the southern part of the country. Meanwhile, security forces fired at anti-government  protesters  in the southern city of Taiz, killing one person and injuring three others. For protestors, Taiz is the ‘heart of the revolution’, and the site of many of the largest demonstrations over the last five months. The protests have been aimed at removing President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Robert F. Worth  is a correspondent for our partner,  The New York Times, and he’s been reporting from Yemen.
