British royals William and Kate begin royal tour of US

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge — or Wills and Kate as they are known — have spent their first night in America.

After a reportedly well-received tour of Canada, the royal couple began their trip to the U.S. with a visit to California.

There to meet them was former England footballer, David Beckham, who was also a guest at their wedding.

His wife, pop star Victoria Beckham, was not with him, as she is due to give birth any day now to their first daughter.

Catherine — as the former Kate Middleton prefers to be called — made four outfit changes yesterday, stepping off the plane from Canada to the U.S. in a lavender dress. She later changed into a green silk gown for a "friends of the UK" bash, involving 200 high profile Britons who live in California.

The LA Times has called the couple’s visit a “highly scripted affair” and said that the couple is unlikely to receive the “Britney Spears treatment” of paparazzi buzzing overheard or documenting their every move.

Not only is their schedule of three day in California tight, but it doesn’t allow room for spontaneous or private events such as shopping down Melrose, or attending local bars or nightclubs.

Frank Griffin, a veteran photographer and head of the BauerGriffin agency, told the LA Times, "The whole tour is well orchestrated and planned out from start to finish with between 50 and 200 photographers snapping away. There is no picture to get that is worth the trouble of trying."

Saturday evening, the royal couple will attend a black-tie dinner and reception hosted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and on Sunday William and Catherine will visit the Inner-City Arts school in a deprived part of Los Angeles.

William and Catherine's visit to Canada over the last week generated huge interest, with an estimated 300,000 people coming out to see the couple in Ottawa on July 1, Canada Day.
