Libya’s Rebels Under Fire

The World

Speaking to Congress on Thursday, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said that he opposes arming the Libyan rebels. Gate’s position is in line with the NATO forces, who have taken over command of Operation Protectorate, as the air attack on Libya is now being called. NATO commanders say they will enforce the arms embargo, no-fly zone and focus on protecting civilians — but not necessarily the rebels. Jon Lee Anderson, staff writer for  The New Yorker, has been spending time with the rebels and reports from Libya on their progress. Also Robert Worth, staff writer for  The New York Times Magazine, featured the rebels in Benghazi in this week’s magazine.
