Daniele Vitale, owner of the Cafe Bar Roma on the small Italian island of Lampedusa, says he decided to revive an old Neapolitan tradition. Customers can pay for an extra coffee, to be left "hanging" for someone who can't afford it.

Daniele Vitale keeps a handmade chart next to his espresso machine to keep track of free coffees donated by customers, known as a caffe sospeso. Since a recent wave of Tunisian migrants began arriving on the island of Lampedusa, he has given away more than 30 cups.

At the Cafe Bar Roma on the small Italian island of Lampedusa, owner Daniele Vitale is going through three kilos of coffee a day, triple that of a regular off-season. Young Tunisian men, migrants awaiting transfer to mainland Italy, occupy most of the tables.
