Closing arguments get underway in California gay marriage trial

The World

Closing arguments are scheduled for today in a federal trial that will address the constitutionality of Proposition 8 — the controversial amendment to California’s constitution that reinstated a ban on gay marriage in the state in 2008, after it had been legal for some months.

But some observers say Judge Vaughn R. Walker has already made his decision. That’s after he sent a list of 39 questions to attorneys in the case, explaining what he wants them to address in their closing arguments.

Lisa Keen is the chief correspondent of Keen News Service, which covers legal and political issues affecting the LGBT community. Keen says she asked three attorneys to take a look at the judge’s questions and “they said it looks like he’s going to write a blockbuster of a decision.”
