Iraqis react to Obama win

The World

As the numbers came in, American soldiers took in the news. American soldiers voted in great numbers this year, which this military leader says is an aberration from past elections especially among young voters. The U.S. military is usually considered predominantly Republican, a fact not lost on these military leaders meeting with Iraqi community leaders. This Iraqi man was surprised that the government was going to a man with the middle name Hussein. A little later, one Iraqi civilian heard the news from a U.S. soldier and immediately said McCain would’ve been better because he would’ve kept American soldiers here for longer. The broad perception among Iraqis reflects that man’s beliefs, and with some Iraqis that view is popular while with others it’s frightening for them. This Iraqi man says he doesn’t think U.S. foreign policy will change much either way.
