The war in Iraq has caused a refugee crisis. Nearly two million Iraqis have been displaced within Iraq, another two million have been driven outside of the country. Nour al-Khal, a translator who survived being shot in Basra, joins the takeaway to discus life after Iraq, and the lives of those who cannot leave the war-torn country.
Guests: Nour al-Kahl, an Iraqi refugee living in New York City. She was American journalist Steven Vincent’s translator in Basra. Nour survived a 2005 kidnapping and shooting — Vincent did not — eventually escaping to the United States with the help of Vincent’s wife.
