Turkey’s headscarf debate

The battle over headscarves is being played out as a referendum for or against the will of the people. The original amendment was passed in February, and that amendment was overturned last week. The Prime Minister addressed the issue today and he was livid. The Court has not yet offered explanation for their overturn. Turkey is deeply divided about the issue. Some in the country consider the headscarf a symbol of political Islam and not of religious freedom as opponents of the ban claim. Most people agree that politics and not simply law were at play in the Court’s decision. The Court will next decide a case that could close down the AK Party all together. This analyst says the Prime Minister may have an overblown idea of his role and power as Prime Minister.
