‘The Takeaway’: Split decisions

The votes came in slowly in Indiana last night — the last votes came in after mightnight. Although Clinton campaigned hard in Indiana, it was a close win for her there. Many voters there were torn between the two candidates. In the end, the economy was the number one issue for voters, and the gas-tax holiday proposal supported by Clinton factored in.

In North Carolina, Barack Obama did better than most expected. Obama’s grassroots campaign in North Carolina played a big part, and the state saw record registration and turn-out.

The candidates’ victory speeches seemed to reflect their tactics for the next few months — Obama was definitely looking forward to November; Clinton’s speech was focused more on the numbers, and the contests to come.
