America’s top diplomat Mike Pompeo made history Thursday by becoming the first US secretary of state to visit an Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank, the entirety of which Palestinians claim as a part of their future state.

Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has ended its COVID-19 vaccine trial with a 95% success rate. Acting US Defense Secretary Christopher Miller announced that President Donald Trump has ordered the Pentagon to reduce the troop presence in Afghanistan and Iraq by Jan. 15. And, the Federal Aviation Administration cleared Boeing’s 737 Max jet to fly again.

Peru appears to be emerging from a political crisis. The new President Francisco Sagasti — who is the third president in a week — is someone who many hope will restore some stability to the country. And, Hurricane Iota made landfall in Nicaragua on Tuesday and is expected to bring up to 30 inches of rain onto already saturated areas, creating life-threatening flash flooding. Also, a new monument in Berlin of a Korean "comfort woman" is aggravating a deep rift between Japan and South Korea, with Germany stuck in the middle.

Turkish authorities say Halla Barakat and Orouba Barakat were killed in a family dispute. Others suspect a targeted assassination.

Hurricane Iota made landfall Monday in Nicaragua as a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph. President Donald Trump reportedly asked his advisers last week for options to attack Iran’s main nuclear site but then decided not to take any action. And, the SpaceX Dragon capsule docked with the International Space Station (ISS) after a 27-hour completely automated journey.
